Store your furniture safely

It takes a little effort to make sure that your furniture will remain in peak condition when you are putting it into storage.  Fortunately there are some simple commonsense steps that you can take to protect any items of furniture, whether they are new purchases or family heirlooms, tables, desks, chairs or couches.

The first thing to do is to look at all the options you have for storage.  It is paramount to protect furniture from the elements. Therefore, if you really want to maintain it while in storage, you will need to choose a storage facility that has both humidity and temperature control so that your valuable pieces of furniture will be safe from changes in temperature and moisture.  At the minimum you should buy a portable dehumidifier and place this in your storage facility.

All items should be cleaned before being put into storage.  It is important to remember that you are not the only customer of the storage company and any unpleasant smells will travel to nearby units.  Cleaning also reduces the amount of dust and the risk of mold in your storage facility.

Soap and water should be perfectly adequate to clean plastic or wooden furniture, although it can be a good idea to use a wood cleaner such as Murphy Oil Soap in order to protect the existing finish on antique wooden furniture.  Fabric also needs to be cleaned with upholstery or fabric cleaner. Ask the professionals what to do and what not to do.  Wrapping goods in plastic will not allow the item to breathe and therefore allow condensation to gather inside.
