Have you ever considered going to a festival dedicated to a fruit? The answer is probably ‘no’; however, if you happen to be in Pasadena, Texas in mid-May, this is exactly what you could be doing. The 42nd Annual Pasadena Strawberry Festival is taking place on May 15th,16th and 17th this year and there is a lot more to the event than you might think.
This is a great event for you to take the whole family along to, as there is so much to see and do. In addition to all the strawberry-themed attractions and events there are plenty of activities you can taking part in, such as fairground rides, a mud volleyball tournament, helicopter rides, magic shows, a petting zoo, duck racing and a wild west show. For the adults there are beer and wine tastings – all locally produced – and there are more than 300 different vendors hosting stalls at the event.
What about the opportunity to see the world’s largest strawberry shortcake? Last year’s cake weighed in at more than 21,000lb and was a triumph and plans are in place to make sure that this year’s shortcake is bigger. Once the cake has been shown you can even buy a piece to take home with you.
Before the main event there will be the Strawberry Festival Parade on May 9th – a mile long parade filled with floats, colorful costumes and plenty of fun. You can apply to take part in the parade and it is a great way to get involved in the event at an early stage.
If you love live music then Texas is a great place to be and the Strawberry Festival will have plenty to offer you; check out the festival’s official website to find out which acts are going to be appearing. Whether you like country music or rock and roll, there is sure to be something that suits you.
If you want to become more involved with the event, you could become a volunteer.
There is a small fee to pay that helps to cover costs and you can apply to become a volunteer up to May 2nd. All you have to do is commit to six hours of work while the festival is on and in return you will get a committee badge that covers you for the three days of the festival, a one-day ticket that you can pass on to a guest, meals while you are working, and a T-shirt that shows you have volunteered. Volunteers and their families are also invited to attend a party thrown by the organizers to show their appreciation for those who have helped to make the event a success.
Tickets cost just a few dollars and young children can get in free or at a reduced rate. A number of charities and other good causes benefit from this event, so why not go along and help a few worthy causes while having fun?
