Tips for first time movers

If you are moving for the first time, you will be probably be more than a little nervous about the experience and about making sure that you choose the right moving company to aid you in this endeavor.  When you are searching for a moving company it is good to find out information such as how long the firm has been in business and how well equipped and trained its crew is.

Perhaps most importantly you will want to check on the papers and credentials of the moving company you are considering using, such as moving licenses and permits.  You can check out the Better Business Bureau to see whether there are any complaints that have been filed against the company, and you can even check out whether the truck or van lines of the moving company have a formal quality rating program and what the scores are if they do.  Your State’s Commerce Commission is also a good resource.

Ultimately you need to ensure the movers you are hiring are professional and not fly-by-night.  The American Moving & Storage Association has a program called ProMover which is directed to rid the relocation industry of rogues and show that moving companies who are ProMovers are credible and held to a higher standard.

When it comes to packing, some moving companies will do your packing for you for various fees; however, you may decide that you would rather pack up your possessions on your own.  Even if this is the case, your moving company can still be of assistance by allowing you to buy or rent boxes or crates.

The most important piece of advice for first time movers is to stop worrying so much.  If you make sure that you get professional assistance from a reputable company then the move should go off smoothly and without a hitch.
