Tips for moving home

Moving can be a very exhausting process due to the sheer level of hard work that it entails.  You need to make sure that everything has been organized in your new home as well as tying up any and all loose ends in your old home, which can be very challenging.  The good news is that moving home does not have to be quite such a daunting experience with a little careful forward planning.  There are some tips and pieces of advice that can help you to focus on everything that needs to be accomplished in order for you to be able to remain on top of everything, particularly for those who are purchasing a new home.

Around four to five weeks before the move will be the period in which you receive formal approval for a home loan.  At this point you will need to get your moving company booked and make certain that you are aware of some pertinent bits of information such as costs, whether the moving company has insurance, if it assists with packing, the claims and delivery procedures, and whether there will be any additional costs should the relocation need to be rescheduled for reasons such as a delay in the settlements, which is something that is fairly common.

If you intend to do your own packing then you will need to buy boxes and packing materials such as adhesive tape, permanent markers and packaging tape.  One piece of advice you should definitely keep in mind is not to make use of newspaper, as it stains and soils items.  Clean white paper should be used instead.  Heavier items should be packed in small boxes and lighter items in bigger boxes, which will make it a lot easier to handle the boxes when they are being moved around.  You should also make sure that every box has been labeled correctly, noting the contents and preparing a box of essentials containing such items as shelf supports, keys, furniture assembly instructions/manuals, remote controls, bed legs and mobile phone chargers.  You should also note the room in the new house that the boxes should be placed in and draw an arrow to make it clear to the movers which way the box should be standing; this is something that is particularly crucial if the box holds breakable and fragile items.

Around three to four weeks before the relocation you should get rid of any possessions that you no longer have any use for, either by holding a yard sale or by giving the unwanted possessions to friends, family members or charities.  You should measure your new home to ensure that you will be able to fit in your existing items of furniture, begin using up any food stored in your freezer, and throw out any food in the kitchen that has now passed its use-by date.  If necessary, you should also start organizing school transfers at this point.
