Opposite Day takes place every year on 25th January in the United States. Opposite Day is intended to be a strange day on which everything is upside down and topsy-turvy – where left is right, up is down, and cats and dogs live together in perfect harmony.
Opposite Day can be a lot of fun, not to mention more than a little bit confusing. School children are the primary demographic to celebrate Opposite Day, with even an episode of the popular children’s cartoon series Sponge Bob Square Pants getting in on the act and featuring the strange things that can take place on this special day. It is unknown exactly when Opposite Day came into being or who was actually responsible for its creation; in fact, it might be best – given the nature – to look for someone who denies all knowledge of it!
References to Opposite Day seem to date back around 14 years to the beginning of the year 2000, although – strangely – there also appears to be a random name-check for Opposite Day in the 1920s to President Calvin Coolidge. Whether the president meant something else entirely when saying this would appear to be open to debate.
In recent times the first Tuesday of January has been mooted as the ideal date for Opposite Day, but the great majority of people still believe it to be the 25th. It is always possible, however, that there may be more than one version of Opposite Day out there, which would be kind of fitting.
