The valuable collection of historic items owned by Tweed River Regional Museum has been made safe for future generations as of yesterday, with the opening of a brand new storage facility in South Murwillumbah that has cost $600,000 to set up.
The facility, which is to house the whole collection in a flood-free, secure and purpose designed space, was opened by the Mayor of Tweed, Barry Longland, who says he knows how important the collections under the care of the Tweed River National Museum are to the community, the local historical societies and all of their volunteers.
“The memorandum of understanding between council and the three historical societies was signed in 2004 and the strategic plan that followed clearly identified the improved care of the collections and enhanced services for visitors and the community as a primary aim,” Longland stated. “The facility delivers handsomely on that aspiration and commitment.”
Staff members and volunteers alike began to move the collection, which was housed at Murwillumbah Museum earlier this year, so that construction could commence on an extension to the museum which itself is costing $2.6 million.
