When is It a Good Time to Look into a Storage Unit

There’s a common misconception that storage units are a luxury; a luxury the average person can’t afford.  However, storage units are much more of a necessity, and one that is available to anyone at any given time. With the various sizes and pricing options, you don’t need to have a large stack of funds or even several items just to reap the benefits.

Here are some common scenarios where renting a storage unit can be an ideal solution.

Temporarily Relocating

Temporarily relocating is one of the hardest moves to do. You have a household full of all the items you need but you’re only moving for a short period of time, so you don’t want to lug everything with you. That’s also not to mention that you’ll be returning to the area, so you don’t want to get rid of your items either.

In this situation, renting a storage unit is the best solution as doing so allows you to keep everything you own without having to move several times in a short time frame. Your belongings will be ready for you when you come back, and in the meantime, you can rent a furnished apartment and not have to deal with the stress of moving any items at all.

Moving

Using a storage unit during a move is often a solution that gets forgotten. After all, you’re moving, so why would you need a storage unit? If there are discrepancies in moving dates between the buyer and the seller, you may need to move out of your house before you take ownership of your new home. You aren’t going to rent a home for a couple of days, weeks or months, and you certainly don’t want to get rid of your items either. So, the best option is to rent a storage to store your belongings while you rent a hotel or reside with a loved one until your new home is ready.

Selling Your Home

There are many reasons why you might decide to downsize. If you’re selling your home, the first thing the real estate agent is going to ask is for you to depersonalize the space. Removing your family photos, personalized home décor and memorabilia is crucial to the success of your listing.

However, you can’t simply remove these items and store them in the crawlspace or basement because these are also areas potential homebuyers will be looking at. So, the best case is to rent a storage unit to store your personalized items while you sell your home. As a bonus, you’ll already have some packing done!

Downsizing

If you’re planning on downsizing but don’t want to get rid of your belongings, a storage unit is an excellent option. You can keep everything you need while storing the items that don’t have to be in your home, such as filing cabinets, extra furniture, holiday decorations, family heirlooms, etc. It’s a win-win. You get to keep your items, downsize and still have access to everything at your leisure.

Kids Moving Out

If you’ve been saving some items for your kids for when they decide to move out, you likely have a mountain of boxes hiding somewhere in your household. However, the more you save for your children’s’ future moves, the less liveable space you have.  That’s also not to mention that these items don’t have to be in the house at this given time, so you might as well clear out space and store the items in a storage unit. This way, they’ll be there when your kids are ready to use them.

…And that’s only to name a few! Home renovations, moving a parent, a loved ones’ estate and sending a child off to college are types of other situations where a storage unit can be a great solution. With the various sizes and prices for storage units, they’re an excellent option for everyone, whatever the situation.
