Maria Sharapova wins in the French Open

Maria Sharapova took 48 minutes to win her French Open first-round match against Alexandra Cadantu on Tuesday.  The score was 6-0, 6-0.

Sharapova has never won the French Open, but this year she certainly looked good during her win against the Romanian.  Sharapova won 51 points during the match, conceding only 18 points.  She will need to win seven matches to take the Grand Slam title, which is why it was an important win for her against Alexandra Cadantu.  Sharapova has won Wimbledon in the past, in 2004,along with the US and Australian Opens in 2006 and 2008 respectively.  In previous years she has reached the semi-finals of the French Open twice, and this year she hopes to go one stage further and take the Grand Sam title.

Sharapova won the Italian Open just last week.  In the past she stated that she needed to focus more and improve her fitness, as she could feel the slowdown in her body. She also had a consistency issue, but her new workout and mental preparation seem to be doing great things for her this year, at least against Cadantu.  Cadantu is only 22, which is fairly young compared to Sharapova, who is 25.  Cadantu’s assessment of the win was that Sharapova was certainly someone who has what it takes and that she, Cadantu, needs to work a little harder.
