Office moving advice for employees

When moving a business or office, the great majority of employers will want their employees to be responsible for the packing of their own files and workspace.  In order to help you to prepare for moving day, here are a few pieces of advice.

You need to make certain that you communicate with your employer with regard to the day of the move.  The date of and plans for the relocation should be communicated to you by your company on a periodic basis as the date approaches.  Some of the information in your files may be confidential, therefore you will want to make sure that you have advice to guide you through the process.

There are various things that you are going to need to be aware of, including the items that you are permitted to take with you, any restrictions on items, rules relating to packing, the method of labeling the boxes that the company has decided on, your own responsibilities on the day of the move – if you have any – and what to do with unwanted items.  Certain personal items of yours are unable to be moved by the professional moving company.

Preparing your files for packing will probably take longer than the actual packing itself, as this is your chance to work out what has to be moved to the new office and what is no longer needed.  Ensure that you are aware of your firm’s document retention policy before you throw any files away.
