Packing filing cabinets for an office move

Your office moving professionals might advise you to leave the filing cabinets as they are and simply lock them for the move; however, this is not always the case. What you have to remember is that you will need to be able to find everything quickly and easily after the office move to ensure that there are no delays in the running of the business.

It is fair to say that in most office moves there will be plenty of items that can be disposed of before the move and the filing cabinet may hold more than its fair share of clutter. Although a filing cabinet is designed to keep you organized, people still have a tendency to just drop things in there to get them out of the way.

Have a discussion with management to find out which documents have to be kept and which can be shredded. Once you have an idea of which documents have to go with you, you can make a start on packing for the office relocation.

The documents that are being moved can be placed in archive boxes or boxes designed specifically for filing to make the move easier. Make sure that the files fit neatly into the boxes, as you do not want them shifting during the move and shuffling the contents.

Make sure that the boxes are properly labeled. Remember that other departments will also have filing cabinets; therefore, label yours with your department name and perhaps the category of documents in the box, such as invoices or statements.
