Packing tips for Storage

If you are making use of a storage facility to keep items safe, you need to make sure that those items are carefully packed.  You also need to think ahead and take all the necessary precautions to make it easier to find items at a later point and to keep them all protected from damage.

It is a good idea to use boxes that are the same size whenever you can when stacking boxes in a storage facility.  You should not store items in plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and are also generally a lot less sturdy than is the case with the great majority of boxes.  All boxes should be completely filled in order to avoid the sides and top from crushing.

If you have loose items such as glassware or toys or possessions that are oddly shaped, any open spaces remaining in the box should be filled with bubble wrap, crumpled paper and other packing material.  Boxes should not be filled too full however, as this can result in them bursting.  Nor should you make boxes so heavy that it is difficult to move them into the storage facility in the first place.  Big boxes should be used for lighter items; heavier items should be placed into smaller boxes.

If you are placing any framed artwork into storage then it should be wrapped in bubble wrap.  It is also a good idea to make use of protective plastic or cardboard corners.
