Questions to Ask the Landlord About Rental Costs

Questions to Ask the Landlord About Rental Costs

When moving apartment you should bear in mind what questions you should ask your landlord. If you are preparing to move into an apartment, there are some things you should know about rental costs.  It is a good idea to ask the landlord or manager about these issues before you even think about signing the rental lease.

Are utilities included?

This might be the first question you ask, after you find out how much monthly rent actually is.  As you know, utilities can add quite a bit to your monthly budget.  If utilities are included in the rent, that can help you save quite a bit in the long run.

What is the security deposit?

You will need to know how much money you’ll need to come up with before you move in.  Some landlords require a security deposit as well as first and last month’s rent.  Depending on what the landlord requires, this could be a substantial amount.

Are pets allowed?

If you have pets or are thinking of getting a pet after you move in, you need to ask this question.  Many landlords will allow pets but only with a pet security deposit.  Other landlords don’t allow animals of any kind.

What about laundry?

You may not be thinking of laundry when you’re getting ready to move, but you do wash your clothes, don’t you?  This is a pretty straightforward question – is there a washer and dryer in the unit or somewhere in the building?  Are there Laundromats nearby?

Is there parking?

Many apartment building complexes include one parking space with your rental while others include two.  However, some complexes have sufficient parking that you don’t need to worry about that.
