Saving money during a move

Saving money during a move

How much do you think it really costs the average person to move?  It is probably a lot more than you might think – on average, the total moving bill can vary depending on the size and distance of the move.  There will also be a difference of what a full-service move would cost (where the movers come, pack up your stuff, and take care of the rest) and a DIY move.

How can you save money during the relocation process? Here are some really effective ways of reducing the cost of your move.

Do not relocate during moving season
You might be surprised to hear that there is a peak moving season – the spring and summer months.  In fact, during the summer a move can cost up to 25% more than at any other time of year.  You can save money by moving during the off-season, which is between October and April.  Another hint: the middle of the month is a good time to book your move as well, since the moving companies are usually quite busy at the beginning and end of the month as leases tend to turn over.

Move less stuff
A good thing to remember is that the less you have to move, the lower the cost. Before you start packing, it is a good idea to unload the stuff you just do not need.  If you hire a moving company, keep in mind that the total weight of your load will be a determining factor in the overall price.  A good way to downsize is to have a garage sale or donate your unwanted goods to a local charity.

Do not buy boxes
Although you might have to purchase a few special packing supplies, such as a box for your mattress or lamps, you do not have to spend a ton of money on boxes.  You can usually find boxes in a variety of sizes put out for recycling at your local bookstore or liquor store.  If you do not want to check the recycling dumpster, simply ask the manager to set them aside for you.  Stay away from grocery store boxes, however, as they may have remnants of food inside. This is something you do not want!

Get moving insurance
Yes, most moving companies offer a certain level of coverage and may even offer additional moving insurance, but it may not be sufficient.  Yes, moving insurance will cost money, but what happens if something is lost or damaged during the move?  The cost of the insurance may actually end up being less of an expense than replacing your valuables.

Shop around
No move should be done without plenty of planning and research.  That means if you are going to hire a moving company, you really need to know whom you are hiring.  Do your research!  There are a lot of moving scams out there and you definitely do not want to fall victim.  Additionally, always get price quotes from at least three different movers.  Remember to always ask about any additional fees so you are not surprised.
