A DIY (do-it-yourself) move may save you a lot of money in the long run, but only if you know what you’re doing. One of the biggest problems people have when moving on their own is finding the best moving truck. What size truck do you need? How much stuff do you have?
Before you even think about renting a moving truck, you’ve got to figure out how much stuff will be crammed into it. We know you’re not a moving company; so eyeballing your household goods might not be the best way to go. Here’s a general idea of the size truck you’d need based on the size of your home:
- 4+ Bedrooms – 26’ truck
- 3-4 Bedrooms – 24’ truck
- 2-3 Bedrooms – 17’ truck
- 1-2 Bedrooms – 14’ truck
- Studio Apartment (or Small 1 Bedroom) – 10’ truck
Of course, this chart isn’t the “be all end all” of choosing the moving truck. You may have a lot of stuff in your garage or even a storage unit filled with items you’ll also need to move. The best way to determine which moving truck is right for you is to give the rental agency a call. Let them know what you’ve got and if you have any odd-shaped or extremely large items. All of this sound like a lot of work; it is! You may choose to go with a trustworthy professional moving company and wipe you hands clean of the worry and backaches!
Another topic to consider is if you’re not comfortable driving a large vehicle such as a moving truck, you may want to think about hiring movers instead. Moving companies offer a wide variety of services, so you will likely be able to find movers that will just load up, transport, and unload your shipment rather than providing a full moving service.
