Things You Should Know About Moving with Pets

You probably already know that moving is stressful on you and your family, but did you also know it can be incredibly stressful on your pet? Your pets, like you, are creatures of habit and when that habit or routine is broken, you have problems. Here are some things to keep in mind when moving with pets.

The Routine

So, in order to keep your pet from experiencing too much stress surrounding the relocation, it is best to stick to the routine. If you usually take the dog (or cat) for a walk in the morning, keep doing it – even on moving day. And when you get to your new home, keep that schedule in place. These habits are particularly important to keep the closer you get to moving day – your pet will know something is up anyway, so why add to the issue?

Leading Up to the Move

Talk to your pet’s veterinarian and get a copy of all the animal’s medical records before you move. This way, you have these documents at the ready when you arrive in your new city. You may also need them for licensing and permits. Also, as the days get closer to the move, keep the doors and windows closed to prevent your pet from running away out of fear.

Getting There

On moving day, ask a trusted friend or professional to look after your pet. This way, the animal won’t be exposed to the movers and chaos. If you are flying, make sure that you book a direct flight and discuss any pet requirements with the airline.
