Is A Tiny Home Right For You?

Is A Tiny Home Right For You?

With the rise in popularity of tiny homes, you have likely asked yourself whether or not you could actually live in one. The idea sounds great – affordable, minimalistic living but the reality is, tiny homes truly aren’t for everyone. To help you determine if downsizing into a super small home is the right decision for you, here are some things to consider.

Can you Declutter Enough?

One of the main requirements to downsize into a tiny home is to remove anything you don’t need from your living space. In fact, your tiny home will likely only be equipped to store the bare minimum of absolutely everything – from your dishes to your linens, décor, appliances and everything in between. So, the first thing to think about is whether or not you can actually declutter enough to fit into a tiny home.
Now, keep in mind that decluttering doesn’t mean you have to get rid of your belongings; you just have to remove them from your living space. Although, you may have to rent a storage unit to house them.

Can You Live with the Bare Minimum?

The second thing to consider is if you can live with the bare minimum. Perhaps you have a large wardrobe or a vast movie collection that you’re passionate about, or maybe you have a collection of décor items you like to display. These are the types of items that you’ll have to decrease in quantity. However, that is another thing to consider – if you can live with the bare minimum by storing your extra belongings in a storage unit, can you live with the inconvenience of not having such items readily available to you?

Can You Forgo Hosting?

Hosting in a tiny home isn’t impossible, but it certainly won’t come without many challenges. It is highly unlikely you’ll be able to fit the entire family in your tiny home for Thanksgiving Dinner, let alone cook a turkey dinner in your miniature oven. While you could certainly set up a dining area outside depending on the weather, you have to ask yourself if the increased time, work, and difficulties are worth it?

If not, then you have to consider whether you can forgo being the host of awesome dinner parties and holiday get-together.

Will You Have Enough Room for Loved Ones, Including Pets?

With a tiny home comes minimal space, which may be great for you. However, if you have pets or family living with you, it’s important to think about whether or not tiny home living is appropriate for them as well.
While some pets can certainly live happily and healthily in a tiny house, others require a significantly larger space to roam.

The same can be said for your loved ones that aren’t a furry companion. Some people, such as yourself, might have a great time living in a small house. However, your partner may beg to differ. That’s also not to mention that there is a huge difference between sharing a home with someone and sharing a tiny home with them. Essentially, you’ll be living in one small room together and this is something to consider, especially if you and your partner currently live in a large home and/or don’t see one another that much when home.

There’s no denying that tiny home living comes with an abundance of benefits. However, it isn’t for everyone. Although the home is significantly smaller, you still need to go through the proper steps to ensure this investment and move is the proper choice for you and your family.
