Tips for packing larger pieces of furniture

It is obvious that you can’t put that armchair you love in a box, so how can you protect it during the move? Most people will simply load larger pieces of furniture onto the van with nothing to keep them safe; however, there are a few things that you can do to prevent scratches and other damage.

Make sure that the arms and legs of your dining chairs are wrapped to prevent scratches. Your moving company might give advice on how to do this, but it is really not difficult to complete this task with some bubble wrap. If you have dining chairs with no arms, these can be bundled together in pairs with the seats placed together. Ensure that you place some sort of padding between the two chairs to protect the seats, and make sure that they are securely fastened together.

Some pieces of furniture can be dismantled ready for the move. Your bed, for example, should be taken apart as best you can. The mattress can be placed in a protective cover during the house move to keep it clean and the bed frame can be taken apart, with any loose rails and cross pieces fastened together with tape. You can also dismantle pieces of furniture such as wardrobes; however, speak to your professional movers first as they may be able to move such pieces without you taking them apart. If this is not the case, you need to make sure that you are able to put the pieces together again at the other end, so make a note of what goes where.
