Why Some People Moved After 9/11

It is hard to believe that it has been 15 years since the tragic terror attacks of 9/11. In the days after 9/11, many families were reeling from the sense of loss of loved ones, and they still are. For many people living in New York City, one of the only ways to move forward was to move away. Despite the fact that the city did bounce back – and the population even grew – many people traumatized by the destruction of the day chose to relocate.

How Many Moved?

Though there aren’t any hard numbers to show how many people moved out of New York City as a direct result of 9/11, almost 2 million moved away between 2000 and 2010, according to census data. After the initial shock had worn off of the event, the fear lingered and grew. It wasn’t until a decade later that the population started to grow once again.

Why Did They Move?

It makes sense that some people might choose to move away from the city in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Being surrounded by so much grief and tension can take its toll on anyone, especially those directly affected by the attacks that day. In the aftermath, there was so much security in neighborhoods that the mere sound of a car backfiring could make people flinch and run. The dust that coated downtown after the attacks proved to be the cause of several respiratory issues and cancers. While this wasn’t reported until several years later, it was a primary reason for many to head out of town.

Subsequent Economic Recession

However, some people moved after 9/11 simply because the economy took a hit as well, especially in the construction industry. After the attacks, the commercial constructions jobs just dried up. Many local businesses around the twin towers also found it hard to stay afloat, especially after being closed for clean up. This paired with the mortgage crisis in 2008 caused many to pack up and move out.

Different Ways to Cope

While some people find comfort in sticking close when mourning a loss, others may be able to deal with tragedy by getting a fresh start. Moving away from an area that reminds people of such traumatic events can provide them with a sense of peace and control. We hope that everyone who moved was able to find support and comfort in other areas of the nation.
