After you’ve done all your research and have a short list of the moving companies you are considering, it is time to choose the mover that will handle your relocation. Before you make a final decision, each mover should swing by your home (or office) and provide you with an estimate.
We know that moving is a high-stress time, so organization is integral to the success of your move – and the key to maintaining your sanity. Here are some basics to remember:
- Give yourself enough time – choosing a moving company can take up to 10 weeks, depending on what time of year it is. If your schedule allows for flexibility during the busy moving season (between May and September), you may find a better deal.
- As you plan your move, make a detailed inventory list of all the items in your home (or storage unit) that will be moved. Include notes on how many rooms your home has, what kind of rooms they are, and any large or awkward items you might have.
- Always get your estimate – binding or non-binding – in writing. Law requires this and any reputable moving company will abide by this rule. Just remember, a rate quote that you get over the phone isn’t the same as a moving estimate.
- If you don’t want to pack up your house, the moving company will likely be able to provide this service. However, packing services come at an extra cost, so you’ll need an additional quote. But, if you do pack your own stuff, the movers may not take responsibility for their safe arrival.
