While using a storage facility that offers climate control is not a perquisite, there are some items that would definitely suffer without it. High humidity can cause some items that contain fabric to develop mildew or mold and make wooden items start to rot. Electronic items are also likely to be damaged in heat because moisture accumulates inside them, while plastics can melt and metal can rust when stored in the wrong kind of conditions.
You need to think carefully about how heat, cold, the lack of light or moisture could have an impact on your goods while you are looking for a storage facility to rent. It is also a good idea to check with the management of a facility to see if they have any advice on how to protect your items.
Other items that could suffer as a result of being placed in a storage facility that does not offer climate control include leather, clothing, photographs, paper, antiques, musical instruments, perishables such as spices, items of food (although it is recommend that these are stored in any facility to begin with, even one with climate control), furs, paintings, film, furniture, and any computer software, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, vinyl records or eight-tracks.
Even if your storage facility does offer protection, it is still a good idea to take a few precautions on your own; for example, placing a protective layer on the floor of the facility will help to protect items from germs, dust and scratches.
