Coppell is a city situated in the northwestern corner of Dallas Callas in the state of Texas. A suburb of Dallas, Coppell has a population of 38,659 as of the last census two years ago back in 2010, with a small part of the city in the far northern region extending into the neighboring Denton County.
Settled by French and German immigrants in the 1840s, Coppell was originally given the name of Gibbs Station in honor of Barnett Gibbs, who later became one of the very first lieutenant governors of Texas. Also to move to the area in the 1840s were members of the Peters Colony. Later on, in 1892, the name of the city was changed to honor George Coppell, a wealthy English financier who came to the United States in the 1880s and is believed to have been heavily involved in the construction of the local railroad line.
The community was incorporated in 1955 via a ballot measure, which was passed with a vote of 41 to 1. In 1974 the opening of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport spurred the city on to radically transform from a small farming village to a big upper-middle class suburban community over the course of the 1980s and the 1990s. Nearly all of the city’s residentially zoned land had been developed by 2000, with relocation seeing the population of Coppell swell to more than 35,000. As well as suburban homes, the city has an increasing commercial base of transportation centers and warehouses on the west and south sides, which are situated in close proximity to the DFW Airport.
Coppell has a complete area of 14.7 square miles according to figures provided by the United States Census Bureau, with 14.4 square miles of that being land and 0.31 square miles being water. The city sits in the northwestern corner of Dallas County in close proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Some of the property of the airport is actually located within Coppell’s city limits. The city is bordered by Grapevine to the west, by Lewisville to the north, by Carrollton to the east and by Dallas and Irving to the south.
The climate in Coppell is humid subtropical. According to an estimate that was made five years ago, the median household income for the city was $106,783, with a family’s median income being $119,229. Females had a median income of $43,750 in comparison to $76,681 for males. The city’s per capita income was $40,219. Around 1.9% of the population, and 1.4% of families, were living below the poverty line, including 1.9% of people below the age of eighteen and 5.7% of those aged over 65.
The local economy is thriving thanks to its proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, with CiCi’s Pizza having its headquarters in Coppell and numerous corporations having distribution and shipping facilities in the city, including Lucent, Mohawk Industries and Samsung.
