Do you need to make a claim for loss or damage?

Obviously we hope that you will never need to make a claim for loss or damage following a house move, but we know that accidents can happen. Most professional movers will go out of their way to make sure that nothing is damaged while your possessions are being moved; however, occasionally something is lost or damaged and you need to know what you have to do next.

The first thing is to report any loss or damage to the moving company as soon as you know about it. It may be that you spot some damage while the movers are still there and this can be noted on the documentation at the time. If you do not spot the loss or damage until after your movers have gone then you need to make sure that you file a report with the company within nine months. Be aware that the longer you leave it the more complicated the situation becomes, as it is more difficult to prove that the loss or damage occurred during the move.

The moving company is legally obliged to acknowledge receipt of your claim and must do so within 30 days. Within 120 days the company needs to either make you an offer of compensation for the loss or damage or issue a denial. You are not able to claim for more than the amount of liability that was declared at the time of the move, and any claim for more than this amount will be immediately declined. A professional moving company will do everything it can to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
