Dorm tips for freshmen

It can be a challenging transition for a freshman to move into a dormitory for the very first time when they go off to a university.  A dorm room can seem hopelessly cramped and insufficient after the ample space and numerous amenities of home, and the move itself can also be tough.  The good news is that there are ways of helping to make the move run more smoothly.

It is important to remember that all dorm rooms are different.  Some may be bigger than others, or strangely shaped, and it is important to be aware of the size and dimensions in order to decide which items from home will fit in the dorm room after the move.  Most university websites will show what students can expect to be provided in their dorm room – some may have window treatments and even refrigerators, while others may fail to provide even basic necessities such as bookcases – and once they are aware of what is included, students will have a much better idea of which items they need to take from home.

The great majority of universities and colleges will provide freshmen with information about the roommates they have been assigned to prior to the move so that they are able to get to know one another beforehand.

These early introductions can also serve as a good opportunity to determine what items each roommate will be bringing and can help to avoid having to make difficult choices about what to take on the day of the move.
