Essential information for a new military spouse

Essential information for a new military spouse

There is a great deal of difference between living a civilian life and a military life, even if you are not the serving partner. If you are moving to a military base, you are likely to find it something of a culture shock. Here are a few things that you need to know.

The first thing is to accept that life is going to change. It does not matter whether your spouse is in the army, air force or navy – military life is very different. The next thing is to find out the rules and regulations that every member of your family living on base is expected to adhere to, as there are penalties if the rules are not followed. The good news is that when you move to a military base for the first time there is always somebody around to help you and to show you the ropes. Community groups and your new neighbors will be only too willing to help, so make sure that you take advantage of their experience.

Make sure that you approach this change in your lifestyle with a positive attitude, as the sheer number of changes that you are expected to deal with can weigh you down if you view them negatively. A positive attitude can make everything easier to deal with and will help you to settle into your new military home. The same applies for your family – children will find it much easier to settle if they see that you are positive about the whole experience.
