Did you know that World Environment Day was in June? That’s right, June 5th marks the holiday that pays tribute to and raises awareness about our planet’s environment. In light of the holiday, we thought we’d take a look at one house that seems out of this world. You don’t have to move to Mars to get a space-age home.
If you know your history, you know that the Soviet Union shot Sputnik 1 into space back in 1957 and ever since the world has been obsessed with outer space. The Futuro House lets you live in a spaceship, so to speak. Though the house isn’t currently on the market, you could move in sometime in the future, should the owners want to sell.
Ever see the classic 1967 film “The Graduate?” If you have, you know that there is just one word to pay attention to – “plastics” – and that is exactly what Matti Suuronen, a Finnish architect did a year later. Suuronen incorporated plastics into many aspects of his Futuro House.
The UFO-shaped house was not originally intended for anyone to move in to and stay all year. The house was actually meant to be sort of a mobile ski chalet with a fireplace, fold-down seats (for eight), and retractable steps. The home is actually much like a UFO.
Back in the 1960s, the home designers wanted these units to be mass-produced and cheap enough for everyone. However, only 96 were built, so not every earthling got to move into their own Futuro House. You can find 48 in Finland and 48 throughout other countries across the globe.
