Helpful storage hints

Using a storage facility can be a pleasant and rewarding experience, but it is advisable to have some understanding of how the facility works and what it is and is not permissible to put into storage.  There are a few helpful hints that should assist you with making the process a smooth one.

What you are and are not allowed to put into storage is determined both by law and by simple common sense.  You cannot store dangerous, environmentally harmful, explosive, flammable, illegal or perishable items, while items such as lawnmowers and any engines that are powered by gas or diesel must have been cleared of any and all fuel before they are placed into a storage facility.

It is a good idea to read the storage agreement that you will have to sign with the owner of the facility thoroughly.  In order to make the most of the storage facility that you are going to be renting, you should stack the professional packing cartons into which you have packed your goods up to around waist height.  Solid larger square items and mattresses should be placed on these cartons; smaller, light items can then be stacked on top of them, working your way upward and forwards.

You can protect surfaces by using protective blankets and sheets, while fridges and freezers should be placed in storage with their doors slightly ajar.  Items that you are going to need to gain access to should be placed near the entrance of the storage facility.
