Did you know that not all moving companies are created equal? While a moving company may have a great marketing campaign and seem like they’re top-notch, they could actually be a mover you might want to avoid. So, how can you tell whether your moving company is reputable or not?
First of all, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or the FMCSA protects consumers like you. This organization provides information to you as far as what your rights are during your move. One tool the FMCSA provides is education on how to spot a rogue mover. Here are some signs of rogue movers:
- A low, over-the-phone estimate
- A low, online estimate
- Estimates based on cubic feet, not weight
- No home inspection or visit
- Demand for cash upfront, before the move
- You don’t get a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”
- A poorly designed website with no contact information
- No licensing or insurance information
- They tell you their insurance covers everything
- Bad reviews and postings on moving scam sites
- Their moving trucks are rental trucks, not company-owned
- Generic sounding company name
- Refuse to provide the address to their home office
- Answer “yes” to every question
- No record in the Better Business Bureau (BBB)
- Hard to reach
When it comes to moving your possessions, you need to be vigilant. So, if you suspect the moving company you are considering is a rogue company, simply walk away. Oh, and remember – check out at least three different companies before deciding.
