Making a new country your home

Making a new country your home

Whether your work has transferred you overseas or you have been searching for a job in another country for some time, preparing to move abroad can be a very daunting endeavor.  The good news is that there are ways to help you to stave off homesickness, build a strong network of friends and integrate yourself into a new community.

The first rule of settling into a new country after a move is to say ‘yes’ to everything, including activities that you might not really care too much about.  The activities are not the important aspect; it is the going out, getting involved and making new friends that counts.  On the other hand, it is not a good idea to go for activities that you really hate, as the obviously miserable are rarely socially popular!

In the first week immediately following relocation you should make it your mission to find the local branch of your bank.  Be sure to introduce yourself and attempt to get a business card from the bank manager or client representative.  It can be a big advantage to have a personal contact at your local bank if you encounter any difficulties with your debit or credit cards.

It is also a good idea to make friends with a local shopkeeper or neighbor.  They can help with advice on how to get the best deals in your new neighborhood or may even prove to be of assistance if you encounter more serious problems.
