Military moving and your spouse

Military moving and your spouse

Over one million Americans move for work reasons every year, around three-quarters of whom are married.  Of course in the military such moves are frequent and commonplace, but what happens to the spouse in such situations?  Military spouses are likely to have already accepted this scenario as a fact of life, but there are still a number of issues that need to be dealt with.

There are several things that a spouse might want to take into consideration as they prepare to make a military move, especially if they are doing so for the first time.  Long-term career goals are one thing they should be thinking about.  Ask for referrals from family and friends, as well as from your current employer, and try to get to know people in your new neighborhood in order to seek out potential leads.  For military spouses especially, trying to develop a career that can be done anywhere would be a very smart idea.

Personal needs for fulfillment are something else that military spouses need to take into account after relocation.  Advancing your education, starting a new hobby or giving up your time to a charity or non-profit organization can be an excellent way to meet new people and reach out in your new community.  Family responsibilities, such as healthcare or finances, might also need your attention.

Answering such questions can help you to work out what is truly important at this point in your life, and the military may even have resources that can help you.
