Packing ahead of a move is stressful enough as it is without you feeling overwhelmed. You know that at some point you are going to be surrounded by boxes and you will start wondering what is in each one, where in the house they have come from, and where they need to go. What you need is a system that will allow you to co-ordinate your boxes so that there is no confusion. The most important thing to keep in mind when packing moving boxes is to consider where in your NEW home items will need to go. This will save you valuable time when the moving company arrives. If the boxes are labeled with the new destination room there will be much less confusion and box shuffling later.
One option is a color-coding system. Give each room a different color and then place a label of this color on the box, which is simple to do. Your bathroom could be blue, for example, and your kitchen could be green. When the moving company gets to the new house, all the blue-coded boxes are simply put in the bathroom and all green-coded boxes are put in the kitchen.
Your next option is to consider a numbering system. This is a system that is slightly more complex but will work well for those with a larger home and therefore more things to pack, and is also a good idea if you are moving internationally. Create a list of contents for each box so that you know exactly what is in each one and keep the list with you. You only need to put the number on the box and this method makes it easier to check that all the boxes are present.
Whatever labeling system you choose to use, make sure you place the labels on the side of the box rather than the top so that nothing is obscured when the boxes are stacked.
