When you get PCS orders you have the right to ship your own car to your new location if you are going overseas; however, this needs to be authorized and has to appear on your orders. You may be able to ship your vehicle to a different port if you get permission ‒ if you want to make this request then you have to address it to the Personal Property Shipping Office.
The government can pay for this part of your military move but you can make your own arrangements, even though there may be some restrictions. If you have a second car that you want to be shipped you may find that there is import duty to be paid and there may be restrictions issued by the host country.
For the US government to pay the vehicle must not exceed 20 measurement tons. There is a method for working this out and military moving specialists can help you to work out whether your vehicle falls within this limit.
You also need to be aware that there is a restriction on the type of vehicle that you can take with you to your overseas posting. The vehicle must have wheels and be self-propelled, which can include cars, motorcycles, motor scooters, vans and pickup trucks. There are other vehicles that may qualify for shipping abroad if you can produce certification or evidence that the vehicle will be for your own personal use.
