Spring Vernal Equinox

Spring Vernal Equinox

The Spring Vernal Equinox takes place on 20th March in 2014 and it will fall on the same date for the next few years.  Many people believe that spring is the best season of all, bringing out thoughts of fishing, gardening and the outdoors – and, of course, romance.

The Spring Vernal Equinox is the date on which day and night are in equal proportion; in other words, it is the day on which there is a precisely equal amount – 12 hours apiece – of daylight and night-time.  Many people are unaware that this is only the case on the equator; the timing can be a little later or sooner for the rest of the planet.

The Spring Vernal Equinox is in reality nothing more than a date on the calendar.  For most people, the real spring will arrive later or sooner in their local area depending on exactly whereabouts they reside in the Northern Hemisphere.  In the Southern Hemisphere the Spring Vernal Equinox takes place later in the year, in September.

The date of the Spring Vernal Equinox is the same date as the start of the Persian New Year.  Easter is calculated by Christian churches as falling on the first Sunday following the first full moon either on or after the Spring Vernal Equinox.  The earliest date that Easter can ever happen in any year is therefore 22nd March, while the latest is 25th April.
