Things to do before a military move

Before you make a move in the military, there are a number of things that you need to make decisions about.  Among these things are setting the precise date on which you will be moving and getting hold of travel allowance estimates.

You need to decide if you intend to perform a Do It Yourself move (DITY) or be moved by the government with the services of a professional moving company.  On some occasions opting for the DITY method of moving may give you the chance to earn some money after the move has been completed.

You also need to do some research on the options surrounding housing and child care in the new area that you will be making a move to.  All military bases have a blacklist of questionable and unsavory areas and rental properties that you should stay well clear of.  Your base housing office will be able to offer resources and advice, and you should always make sure you use a realtor with a reliable reputation to help you to find the best housing options possible.  Ask reputable daycare centers for referrals.

You will also need to begin planning your budget for the military relocation.  Remember that you will be able to be reimbursed for the great majority of moving expenses but that you need to be able to cover your expenses in advance in case there is a delay in processing the funds.
