Tips for a smooth office move

When you are planning your office move there are bound to be snags from time to time; however, the good news is that many of these can be avoided with a little forward planning.

Have you considered making an inventory? Businesses – particularly larger ones ‒ tend to have a lot of items and while some things can be disposed of before the move, you should consider getting together a list of what the company owns and what will need to be moved on the day. This will not only help the moving company but will also help you when you come to unpack, as everything can then be checked off the list. Ask the head of each department in your company to put together a list of what they have and what will need to be moved.

Do you have plants dotted around the place? Remember that it is unlikely that your moving company will take these. Make a member of staff responsible for getting these to the new office and remember that someone might need to take them home overnight.

Make sure you factor in plenty of time in the run-up to the office move for the packing to be done. Adjustments will need to be made to work schedules, as it is unfair to expect staff to carry on with their day job as before and make extra time for packing. This would be likely to put pressure on the team and standards may start to slip; therefore, assign one afternoon a week for packing in the few weeks before the move and then go full-time on it for the last couple of days.
