Tricks and tips when putting your possessions into storage

Many of your possessions can be safely stored in a storage facility, even without climate control.  It is important to avoid packing any items that are sensitive to heat, such as lotions and candles, but just about everything else will be perfectly fine in a standard unit.

On self-storage it is crucial for you to make sure that the door to your storage facility has a good lock, as this is one of the best things that you can do to keep your items protected. For a full-service option be sure the storage company is reputable and has proper security measures in place and conducts regular pest control measures. Coverage is not necessarily required but is recommended in order to give peace of mind, particularly if the items being stored are of particular value.  Check your home owners insurance to see whether stored items are covered or if you need to attach a small rider or valuation coverage.

You need to plan out your storage space.  Place items that you are likely to need access to close to the front of your storage facility and make sure that you leave room for walkways.  Shelves are an excellent method of keeping things organized and easy to find, in addition to helping to prevent boxes from being crushed.

You need to make an inventory of all the items you are putting into storage and this list should be kept either in a safe deposit box or somewhere secure at home.  It is also a good idea to buy a cheap drop cloth to put over your items to protect them from dust.
