What should I ask my moving company?

It is never a good idea to hire a moving company’s services without first asking a few questions, but what sort of things do you need to check with your moving company before you allow it to enter your home?

The first thing is to make sure that the company is registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It should have what is called a USDOT number, which is issued by the Department of Transportation. This number can be double-checked online.

Most companies will have standard rates for shipping; therefore, ask them about these rates and obtain a written quote. The weight of your goods and the distance you are moving will be taken into consideration when a quote is put together. If you are only moving a short distance, the company may prefer to give you an hourly rate for its services instead.

It may be that at some point during the process the moving company will subcontract to another company. Find out whether this will be the case with your move and obtain the details of the subcontractor if this is the case. The moving company should be happy to give you this information.

Find out whether the moving company has a policy of adding on fees for different things. Sometimes there may be a fee for moving awkward items or if access to the property is difficult. It may be possible to avoid these additional fees by planning ahead, so discuss this with your movers to find out more. Those who are moving to a remote area may find that additional fees also include fuel surcharges.
