Did you know that you can significantly cut energy costs by caulking around drafty doors and windows? Did you also know that you don’t even have to be particularly handy to do this? When it comes to caulking, move over Bob Vila, anyone can do it! You’ll just need a little patience and a couple of tools.
If you notice a draft coming from a door or window, take a closer look at it both inside and outside. To test for a draft, move a stick of burning incense near the panels and gaps and watch the smoke. If it moves horizontally, you have a draft. Also if you find old, cracked caulk then this is likely to be another sign that you probably have a draft. Whether it be before you move in or after, caulking to save money is always wise.
When shopping for caulk, you’ve got to make sure you get the right kind. There’s latex and silicone. Latex caulk can be painted over, so it is a great solution for the interior of your home. Silicone is mildew-resistant so it’s a good idea for bathrooms and kitchens. It’s also good for outside.
The caulking gun should be of good quality. There are manual caulking guns and automatic, though they will vary in price. Go to the local hardware store and test them out. Get whichever fits your budget and feels the best in your hand when using it. If you don’t have a whole lot of caulking to do, consider a squeeze tube of caulk.
When you caulk your home, you’ll need to start with a clean surface. That also means removing any old caulk out of the area and cleaning up any debris. Always do a couple of practice lines on a sheet of paper or cardboard before you start on the job in hand.
