Young adults and children stay connected when moving

While baby boomers are not always au fait with connected homes, their children will not be too happy without them on moving day.  When they move into a new home, children and young adults want to make sure that the new house has plenty of electrical outlets and phone jacks.

While only 17% of all households are overly concerned with having a connected home when they move – a house where computers, heating ventilation and air conditioning, lighting and even televisions are all connected to a centrally controlled network – 42% of young adults aged between 18 and 24 think that it is the most important aspect of relocation, with around one in ten younger US citizens choosing access to and availability of high speed internet as the single most desired feature of a new home and of far more importance than features such as a gourmet kitchen, fireplace or walk-in closets.  55- to 64-year-olds still rate it as important, but no more so than a walk-in closet, while 25% of older people would rather have a gourmet kitchen and 12% are more interested in a good fireplace.

When a family arrives at their new home, the telephone is the first thing to be reconnected.  This is followed by the microwave and the television, with the computer – perhaps surprisingly – coming in last place.  Whether you believe this or not, I think it is always a good idea to make sure that new connections are set up before you actually get to your new home.
